Monte São Sebastião

“We make a point of perpetuating the traditions of the Douro, for these are what characterize our identity. Come relive them with us…”.

Until about 1950, Quinta Monte São Sebastião consisted essentially of olive trees and some wasteland. After that date, vineyards were planted taking advantage of the good solar exposure, the terraces, and an olive grove, almond grove and other consociated fruit trees were planted. At the same time they started the construction of the house, a typical vineyard house with traditional lagares in the cellar, and where the wine of the Quinta was made. Later on, an alembic and a small house were built to house the Quinta’s workers. For the time, and due to its privileged location, abundant manpower and material resources, Quinta Monte São Sebastião was considered a state of the art agricultural exploitation.

In the following decades, the family always tried to maintain and increase its viticultural patrimony, as well as to worry about the farm’s sustainability. The vineyards and olive trees of the Quintas are in the process of Integrated Production, so we respect certain norms with the purpose of guaranteeing environmental protection.

For several decades, the main activity of the Quinta was the production of grapes destined to prestigious Port Wine companies. Until, in 2006 with the remodelling of the house and the inauguration of an Agrotourism lodging unit, the first wine bottled with the Quinta’s own brand was created.

Currently, the agricultural exploration of Quinta Monte São Sebastião, is composed of a set of several farms, occupying a total area of 50 ha, of which about 35 ha are for wine production, this being the main agricultural activity of the farm. The remaining area is occupied with olive groves, orchards and almond trees. Over time, Quinta Monte São Sebastião has remained in the hands of the Breia family, always with the same goal: to preserve, expand, improve and innovate.

Who we are

Vineyards

Located in northeastern Portugal, surrounded by mountains that give it particular mesological and climatic characteristics, the Douro Demarcated Region was the first region in the world to be demarcated and regulated, in 1756, under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal. It covers a total area of about 250,000 hectares and is divided into three naturally distinct sub-regions – Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior.

The vineyards of Quinta Monte São Sebastião are planted in the sub-region of Cima Corgo, municipality of Murça, and are characterized by their altitude, excellent sun exposure, schist and granite soils, which contribute to the complexity and intensity of the wines produced here. These characteristics together allow us to produce very balanced wines, with character and uniqueness.
